DISCUSSING TYPHOID FEVER
Typhoid Fever is an infection caused by the bacteria called Salmonella Typhi. This
disease is also known as gastric fever, enteric fever, abdominal typhus,
infantile remittent fever, slow fever, nervous fever and pythogenic fever. The germs
(bacteria causing typhoid fever are mostly found in situations where good
standards of hygiene are not maintained.
In Nigeria,
typhoid affects children and adults and if not properly treated could be fatal,
it is largely a disease of developing nations due to their poor standard of
hygiene and unavailability of portable water. It is transmitted faecal-orally
through contaminated food and water.
1. Wash your hands frequently thoroughly
with soap and water especially after using the toilet and before eating. Hand
washing is one of the simplest, yet, process extremely helpful habits you could
develop.
2. Cook your food properly, when
you order your food to be served hot and steaming.
Avoid street hawkers and public eating places as much as you can.
3. Watch the water you drink, boiled
treated water is the best boiled water is even better.
4. Wash your fruits and vegetables
properly, and do it yourself, wash your vegetables with warm salted water also
don’t forget to wash your hands before washing your feet.
5. Maintain strict personal hygiene and
sanitation, keep your nails short, keep your toilet clean and free of flies (
else they visit your food , loaded with stuffs) regularly clean handles of
toilets, doors and water taps.
6. Avoid risky foods and drinks and get
vaccinated against typhoid fever.
